Fast Travel
If it were possible to travel at the speed of light, how long would it take to travel from New York City to Singapore, on the other side of the earth?

Answer: About 1/14th of a second.

Calculation: The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. The earth is about 25,000 miles in circumference, so a beam of light would travel 186,000/25,000 = 7 times around the earth in one second. (That it only takes a fraction of a second is obvious, given that with modern communications methods we can talk in real time to people on the other side of the earth.) Since Singapore is approximately half way around the globe the time required to travel the distance is 1/(7x2) = 1/14 of a second.
